C. Cenac & Co. was the first commercial seafood cannery and distributor of oysters in Louisiana. By 1910, Jean-Charles Cenac and his brothers were the largest shippers and packers of oysters in Terrebonne parish.
Off-bottom culture works best when oysters can be raised individually, instead of in clumps. The key to obtaining single-seed oysters involves hatchery-produced larvae and the use of micro cultch, finely ground cultch material with a particle size that will only support a single, newly settled oyster.
The owner of C. Cenac & Co, Cecelia Taylor Cenac‘s family are long term residents of Laurel and Biloxi, Mississippi. Local means ensuring all the people of Mississippi benefit from the oyster industry. Her goal is to be Mississippi Oyster industry's trusted resource for our Oyster farmers, an employer of choice, an envoirmental steward, and a respected female owned small business partner with our Gulf Coast communities and government agencies.
C. Cenac & Co. means "& Co." We understand the value of strengthening the local economy, but can only succeed by creating alliances with the most experienced, trusted, local experts. We have agreements with Local Oyster Farmers, Local Barge Companies, and Local Reef Conservation Groups which allow for unprecedented local use of our Mississippi resources. Our goals are to improve opportunities for all in our community by providing reliable resources, superior customer service, and innovative oyster farming solutions at fair and reasonable prices.
